This cartoon (illustrator unknown) may depict a worrying shift in how the relationship and role between educator and student has evolved, however there is merit in its message. As students are faced with distractions and a propensity to multitask, the teacher is challenged to provide a learning alternative that is engaging and enticing enough to maintain their attention spans. Now, promoting integers over Instagram and Shakespeare over Snapchat might seem impossible, the challenge is to at least establish the value of deeper learning and inquiry, beyond the instantaneous satisfcation that millenials so eagerly seek. If students aren't engaged, then it certainly is fair for parents to ask the teachers "why not?"
